Frequently Asked Questions

What is the largest part that can be made?

Most parts can be sectioned and built to any size. For single piece parts built whole, Insty-Metal inches to 3 feet, CNC parts can be built as large as 30" x 60" x 24" for both metal and plastic, Rubber Molds unlimited, SLA as large as 25" x 29" x 21", SLS as large as 22" x 22" x 18" and FDM as large as 20" x 24" x 24". >>learn more.

What file format order you like to receive CAD files?

STEP is preferred, followed by IGES, then STL, or call us at 651-450-8272 for information on files not listed here.

How fast can I receive my parts?

Most orders are shipped in 2 to 5 days, however large parts and assemblies may require more time.

Is there a part Guarantee on your parts build?

Yes, The Prototyper stands behind the services we offer, if for any reason you are unhappy with the parts you receive, contact us immediately so we can make it right.

Could my parts be painted or use as mold masters?

Most of the methods we offer the parts can be painted, in turn, used as mold masters. For RTV molds (may require shrink) we recommend SLA, for thermoforming molds we recommend FDM. However, call 651-450-8272, to find the most ideal method for your parts need.

How can I get my 2D drawing made into a 3D part?

This is a fairly common question & we can handle it in one of two ways. If you send us your 2D design with dimensions, we can have the CAD work done for you, in hope that we have the opportunity to produce the parts, once you reach that stage.

Which process is the best?

Every process has its strengths and weaknesses and unfortunately the best process for one project may actually be the worst The next. We do not sell you on a technology and make your project fit it. Rather, we review your program and show you the multiple options available for development. Please call our project manager at 651-450-8272 to help steer you in the right direction.

Can Your company color match a part or add texture?

If you choose a 3D stereolithography method, most parts can be painted to match a specific paint chip or PMS (Pantone) color. Urethane castings can be molded in a matched color or painted to match a specific metallic color.

What file format do you require?

STEP is preferred, followed by IGES, then STL, or call us at 651-450-8272 for information on files not listed here.

How come you don't provide instant quoting?

Because pricing and lead times can be subject to part geometry, and quality assurance is a direct result of the proper method  selected, orientation & good data. However, our project managers actually catch an error in the CAD file (which would have lost you time and money), these are things that would normally be unnoticed with an on-line algorithm based quoting system. Real lead times, communication, proper build styles and orientation are far more superior to any on-line quoting system.

What compression method do you recommend for sending CAD data via e-mail?

When e-mailing or attaching files we always recommend compressing the files with Win ZIP, or upload to our FTP server.

Why The Prototyper can work for you?

The advantage of working with The Prototyper is that we are not a oversized corporation with fixed overhead cost. Our humble approach & policies enable us to be flexible. We work with budgets of all sizes and the account manager assigned to you will always make your individual needs, lead time, and budget their first priority.

Do you offer quantities discount?

Usually, the number of parts and overall size of the project can decrease the per part price. And when used in production run manufacturing applications.

Can concepts be built as a whole assembly?

Yes a few of the methods we offer such as, FDM, and SLS can build full assemblies. This is due to the support material being easy to separate from the part. FDM allows us to use soluble support, and SLS excess powder is blown off the parts upon completion.

What is the minimum wall thickness?

Typically .040" is the recommended minimum for most methods. However SLA and FDM (High-res) can have features as small as .020". Parts with non load bearing walls built flat, can be as little as .010". The key note is realizing that features under .020" cannot be guaranteed to show up.

Do you sell to international companies?

Yes, we have customers in Canada. However, feel free to call or e-mail us if you are concerned about your location.
